{"id":6424,"date":"2022-02-08T11:35:17","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T10:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foodrisk.eu\/?p=6424"},"modified":"2025-11-19T11:36:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T10:36:31","slug":"publication-of-the-2020-annual-report-on-food-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foodrisk.eu\/en\/publication-of-the-2020-annual-report-on-food-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication of the 2020 annual report on food fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Food Fraud Network has just published <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/system\/files\/2021-09\/ff_ffn_annual-report_2020_1.pdf\">its 2020 annual report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fraudulent activities that impact the agri-food chain can pose a risk to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The number of requests for administrative assistance for suspected food fraud rose from 292 in 2019 to <b>349 in 2020<\/b>, an increase of <b>20%.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Below is the number of suspected cases of fraud by product type:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Oils and fats<\/b>: 51 (olive oil was the most frequently reported).<\/li>\n<li><b>Fish and fish products<\/b>: 34 (illegal treatments: undeclared addition of water, nitrates, carbon monoxide)<\/li>\n<li><b>Poultry and poultry products<\/b>: 28<\/li>\n<li>Honey and royal jelly: 25<\/li>\n<li>Meat and meat products (excluding poultry): 25<\/li>\n<li>Food supplements, fortified foods, dietetic foods: 22<\/li>\n<li>Fruits and vegetables: 21<\/li>\n<li>Wines and alcoholic beverages: 12<\/li>\n<li>Plant protection products: 11<\/li>\n<li>Cephalopods, crustaceans, and related products: 10<\/li>\n<li>Herbs and spices: 9<\/li>\n<li>Milk and dairy products: 8<\/li>\n<li>Other products: 43<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Five types of non-compliance were listed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>37%<\/b> concern <b>incorrect labeling<\/b>, for example when non-extra virgin olive oil is presented as extra virgin.<\/li>\n<li><b>25%<\/b> concerned falsification of <b>documents <\/b>or traceability issues.<\/li>\n<li><b>21%<\/b> concerned <b>replacement\/dilution\/addition\/removal in the product<\/b>: this refers to the process of mixing or replacing a high-value ingredient with a low-value ingredient, such as watering down wine, for example.<\/li>\n<li><b>13%<\/b> concern <b>unapproved treatment and\/or processes<\/b>: tuna treated with nitrite.<\/li>\n<li><b>4%<\/b> concern <b>violation of intellectual property rights<\/b>: this refers to counterfeit products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adulteration is the third most common cause of fraud, accounting for 21% of cases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Food Fraud Network has just published its 2020 annual report.
